The mikeka collection and its interwoven histories become meaningful in social relations. Guided by plaiting and poetic practice,Talking Mats has evolved into an international multi-layered partnership between museums, individuals, experts, knowledge bearers, and communities. Through listening to each other as well as to distant voices and by reviving the endangered cultural heritage of weaving words, Talking Mats soundly addresses past injustices and knowledge imbalances. In this process, a dialogue has emerged between individuals, cultures, and institutions, giving rise to new connections and shared understandings: through interdisciplinary workshops, multi-venue exhibitions, short films, theater, music and dance performances and woven mat-messages.
